Ms OWENS (Parramatta) (1.50 p.m.)—Yesterday I was very pleased to attend the opening of the new Parramatta office of the Advocates for Survivors of Childhood Abuse, or ASCA. The location of the office near Parramatta, the geographical centre of Sydney, will, hopefully, allow more survivors of childhood abuse in Sydney to participate in ASCA's activities and allow their excellent staff to assist in their recovery and healing processes.

Some supported the victim, while others cast doubts on whether ritual abuse really exists, or is a figment of the imagination. So is it real or not?

In 'Agony Aunts' (23/05/06), the ABC showed footage of a mother screaming at her children in an out-of-control manner. The scene was apparently included to illustrate how the woman became overweight (being a mother is stressful; stress is related to overeating. Disturbingly, the producers offered the woman medical help for her obesity, yet failed to offer her help to heal her problem behaviour towards her children.

Mal Brough is to be commended for raising the difficult issue of child abuse, and the need to find solutions to the problem of paedophiles preying on children. However this is not a problem confined to Aboriginal communities. As is becoming gradually more apparent, there are paedophiles operating in many sections of our community. - Whether in organised rings or not is probably always difficult to ascertain.
